What makes NEGSMD the right choice for you?
All we do is teach. We do not sell or rent instruments or music. This frees us up to specialize in one thing - providing the highest quality of music instruction.
Our instructors are highly qualified and have extensive performance experience. Most importantly, our instructors strive to relate their teaching to each individual student's learning style.
- All Ages - Beginners to Advanced
Our current students range from 3 years old to students in their 60's. We take care to teach what you want to learn, so music is rewarding for students of all ages and levels.
Private lessons ensure that the student has the undivided attention of the teacher and can progress at a level suited to them individually.
Concerts are held at least twice a year. These provide students with performance experience and build confidence. Participation in music festivals are also available.
From the age of 3, children are exposed to the basics of music in a fun supportive group environment. This program builds a solid foundation for later success in private lessons.
New for the 2008-09 school year, we will be offering Musical Theatre for ages 11-18. This class teaches the fundamentals of music as well as staging and dance techniques used in musicals. Great for students involved in theatre at their school!
Music Lessons
Private lessons are offered in piano, guitar, and voice. We have found that private one- on-one instruction allows students to progress at their own pace and gain the best understanding of musical techniques. Students can start private lessons as young as 5 years old. They can also start private lessons any time of the year or month so there's no need to wait to get started. Contact the school office to see which times and days are available.
Students are given the opportunity to perform in concerts held over the course of the year. All of our music concerts have free admission, so family and friends can attend and enjoy the performances. We have made it a tradition to bring food bank donations to the concerts to make the events both enjoyable and meaningful.

Common Music Questions and Answers
Q: Do I need a piano at home to take piano lessons?
A: It is ideal if you do have a piano at home, but you can start lessons by using an electric keyboard for practice. Most of our students rent or buy small electric keyboards to practice on at home. We recommend a keyboard that has regular sized keys and a touch sensitive response. A touch sensitive keyboard means if you press a key harder, it will play louder, and if you press a key lighter, it will play softer.
Q: How long does it take to learn an instrument?
A: There is no set answer for how long it takes to learn an instrument. With regular practice, a basic level of playing can be accomplished in a few months. Most of our students take lessons on a long term basis because they want to constantly be improving, and they find the lessons enjoyable.
Q: I don't have any musical background or ability. Can I still help my child practice?
A: Yes. Even if you don't have a musical background, you can ask the teacher for advice on how to help your child practice. By simply monitoring that they are doing exercises a certain number of times per day, the student will progress. If parents have questions, they are welcome to sit in on their child's music lesson to get an idea of the proper way a song should sound, or how the student should be positioning their hands.
